Hi! I'm Jules!
A Midwest-born chef, holistic health coach, entrepreneur and educator with big dreams. Some people call me a cheerleader, others their Google for nutrition. All I know is that I love people and get so much joy from helping them achieve their purpose in life, healthy, whole and free. Making one feel valued, wanted and known is in my blood.
Obsessed with: Jesus; the kitchen; fresh produce; warm weather, island life, the sun and beach; all-things-nutrition and free weights; long walks and talks; green things that grow; traveling; Europe; dresses and lipstick.
I've been keepin' it real on this planet since 1992.
I guess one could say that both healthy living and all-things food were in my DNA from the beginning.
As a 10 year-old, I would lie in bed at night, eyes wide open as I thought about what I would make the next day. “These muffins sound perfect! Though, I’ll swap out oats for white flour and use a little honey instead of sugar… maybe some organic coconut oil instead of butter too?”
Believe it or not, I would pour over old 1950s cookbooks (Betty Crocker anyone?), pleasure-reading as if they were novels. I’d take in the recipes, admiring the sketches and then would head straight to the kitchen to put my own spin on what I found. I collected food magazines and clipped the many French and Italian recipes I found featured in travel sections, hoarding them as if they were top-secret treasures that made me feel like a professional.
Europe captured my heart from a young age. I wanted to be Julia Child in Paris, clad in heels with a basket on my arm, openly admiring the markets and trying the variety of dishes.
Fast-forward to a few years later, I watched the movie Ratatouille and, needless to say, I never thought a rat could capture my heart as much as sweet Remy did; I was enthralled. From then on, Culinary School was the only thing that made sense. With the making of Julie and Julia, I was shocked that somehow, they got into my mind and made a movie of everything I loved... and my name was even thrown in there!
This is where the bump in the road comes.
I graduated culinary school and shortly after, found myself in a dark place, battling a serious eating disorder. I was depressed, angry, hopeless and oh-so-ill. Many (including myself) were sure I wouldn’t make it.
However, as someone who was introduced to Jesus before birth, I grew up with a strong faith, knowing all about God and learning Scripture before I even learned the alphabet. I knew that an eating disorder was not the abundant life (John 10:10) that God had for me. I fought hard for a few years, learning the root cause of it all and slowly dealing with it.
I learned what it meant to walk in freedom and now, with a gratitude I will never be able to express, I can say I have been free of it for years. God is good.
I spent the next few years cooking, traveling and working, experiencing countless restaurants and all the cuisines- it was a total blast! I moved to Maui and lived the island life for a couple of years, working in various restaurants and with several individuals, helping them prioritize their nutrition.
Slowly but surely, I began to feel that tug on my heart (ya’ll know what I mean?) and realized I was made for so much more than the restaurant life. My passion for functional medicine, wellness and living free seemed to trump the hospitality industry as I realized that for years, I’ve always loved helping individuals achieve and live a healthy lifestyle … it was totally and completely my jam!
Only a month or two after this realization, I headed straight back to school and enrolled with a program that had an emphasis in functional medicine. I graduated with a certification in Health Coaching and immediately began helping those closest to me… when you know what you’re supposed to do, why procrastinate?!
I knew this was my one-way ticket to my dream job and a life that was made up of serving others, doing what I love and seeing countless individuals step into their purpose: free, whole, well and really alive.
I discovered the power of functional medicine in my late teens and realized that it was something I would use to not only change myself but also use to catapult others into their own wellness journeys. I’m convinced that what we put at the end of our fork can either make or break our health, therefore, it is absolutely so important that it is good! I totally identify as an all-around foodie and firmly believe that what we eat shouldn’t only taste and look amazing, it should also nourish and make us healthier. As the late Truett Kathy said,
"Food is essential to life; therefore, make it good."
Fast forward a few years, I took my love for people, functional medicine and delicious food and combined it with my passion for holistic nutrition and coaching, forming Nothing but Nourished.
